Bridge needs extension to solve traffic problem
To the editor:
Fort Myers is truly a paradise, except for one major problem. The people who live and work here on a regular basis – especially during season – are breathing carbon monoxide on a daily basis as ten thousand cars sit in front of their homes and offices idling.
I believe smoking cigarettes is the leading cause of lung cancer, followed by idling cars as the second. All the studies that were done pertaining to the skybridge have proven fruitless; nothing has ever been done.
But there is a solution.
Extend the bridge over the current street and bring it down at Hooters; simple solution. It would be built on the existing road and therefore no business would be disrupted. Everyone could walk or drive underneath on Estero Boulevard. The probelm with the traffic is the bottleneck – from the base of the bridge to Hooters – in both directions.
Our new president, Barack Obama, has set aside large sumes of money to get people back to work on bridges and roads. What better opportunity could Fort Myers Beach residents have than asking the federal government for the money to solve this problem once and for all?
Lee County has built an overpass and underpass on Summerlin and Gladiolus and one on San Carlos Boulevard to get Sanibel residents home to the masions quicker, while you people are left holding the bag.
I personally have seen this traffic jam go all the way back past Flamingo Street and Munch Box restaurant. This can only happen if you call your Town Council and make them accountable for this problem. Keep calling.
