Scanlon to attend fire commission meeting
Fort Myers Beach Fire Commission Chairman John Scanlon will be in attendence at the next scheduled fire commission meeting in the Fire Station 31 meeting room Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m.
“I most definitely will be there,” said Scanlon, who could not comment further.
Scanlon is currently on an administrative leave after being arrested New Year’s Eve for possession of cocaine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, according to a probable cause statement released by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. The State Attorney’s will not file charges for possession of a controlled substance without a prescription but has filed charges on the other three counts.
“It’s been reviewed,” said Samantha Syoen spokesperson for the State Attorney’s Office Tuesday. “We have filed three charges. The first is possession of marijuana, the second is possession of cocaine and the third is possession of paraphernalia.”
State Attorney’ s office did not file charges for possession of a controlled substance without a prescription.
“The reason we did not charge for possession without a prescription is he did have a prescription,” said Syoen.
Scanlon’s next court hearing is Feb. 18.
If Scanlon were not to show at the fire board meeting, this would be strike two for him and he could be removed from the fire commission if he misses a third consecutive meeting, slated for the third Tuesday in March.
“Since his job is chairman, I would expect that he will address the concerns out there at some level,” said Becker.
Scanlon received a first “strike” for not attending the commission’s January meeting.
The meeting’s advance agenda, unavailable at press time, can be obtained by calling the administrative office for the Fire Control District at 463-6163. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
