Local club plants in butterfly garden
As part of its 50th anniversary, the Estero Island Garden Club continued to enhance its theme of ‘beautification is our business’ with a planting project in the butterfly garden at Bay Oaks Monday Feb. 16.
The club’s day began with a lecturer at 9 a.m. followed by the planting near the entrance of the Bay Oaks Recreation Center.
Gayle Edwards, who is a master gardener, spoke on butterfly gardens and how to take care of them. She then lent the club members a hand in the garden.
“We’re adding more color and plants to bring in more butterflies,” said Sylvia Lachapelle. “This is a joint venture between the town and the garden club.”
The club also takes care of the butterfly garden at Bowditch Point Regional Park.
“We want to invite all men and women to come and join our club,” said Jackie Vanderspoel. “Our membership is open.”
Many butterfly host plants were added to the array including wild coffee, muhly grass, tropical sage, indian blanket, milkweed, blue porterweed, red firebush, coontie and mistflower.
Gardening adds beauty, fragrance and nutrition through the growing of herbs, vegetables, foliage and flowers.
