FGCU students raise money for CROW
Five Florida Gulf Coast University students recently raised several hundred dollars in donations to benefit the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW).
The “friendraiser” was part of a group project for their Foundation of Civic Engagement course, in which students were asked to select an organization they are passionate about and host an event or fundraiser to support that cause.
Jennifer McWhinnie, Vahid Wafapoor, Brandon Kuhn, Patrick Trelease and Rob McNeal set up an information booth in the FGCU student union and handed out brochures on the wildlife rehabilitation hospital. CROW Volunteer Coordinator Marguerite Jordan was on-hand to field questions.
“This is a great group of inspiring students, and we appreciate their efforts in spreading awareness about CROW,” said Dr. PJ Deitschel, clinical director and staff veterinarian. “It is crucial to promote awareness and appreciation of our native and migratory wildlife through education. It is only through knowledge and understanding that people will value, preserve and protect our environment and wildlife.”
CROW provides a variety of educational outreach programs through local schools and community organizations, and also offers student internships, externships and fellowships at the clinic.
In addition to monetary donations, the FGCU students collected items on CROW’s wish list to help support the hospital. CROW’s full wish list, which includes items such cleaning products, pet food and gift certificates, can be found at www.crowclinic.org/help.html.
Located on Sanibel Island, Fla., the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) was established in 1968 and is one of the nation’s leading wildlife rehabilitation hospitals for native and migratory wildlife. A nonprofit wildlife veterinary hospital, CROW provides medical care for more than 4,000 injured, sick and orphaned wildlife patients every year, with the goal of returning them to their natural habitat. In 2009, CROW opened its new Healing Winds Visitor Education Center, an interactive facility that allows guest to learn first-hand about the organization’s mission. CROW is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that relies exclusively on philanthropic support from individuals, corporations and foundations and we hope you will consider supporting CROW through membership, volunteer efforts, wish list and other gifts. CROW also offers a variety of educational programs to the public. For more information, call 239-472-3644, ext.1 or visit www.crowclinic.org.
