Beach school student does right thing
Kelsey Collins, a fifth grader at Beach Elementary School, was awarded the prestigious “Do The Right Thing” trophy for her role model and leadership skills at the Lee County Public Education Center in Fort Myers Thursday, Feb. 19.
“It makes me feel real important,” the 11-year-old said. “it makes me think I did something good.”
Kelsey was nominated by her teacher, Anita Parmer, who calls her ‘an awesome writer and speaker’ and someone who ‘seeks help when she finds a task challenging and sticks with it until she masters a skill.’
Kelsey, the president of Kiwanis kids who may be attending Lexington Middle School next year, has many role models including Parmer, her mom (who works at the Sleep Disorder Center of Southwest Florida), her dad (who is self-employed) and her brothers.
She agrees that academics do not always come easy to her.
“Most of the time I have trouble in math,” said Kelsey. “But, I don’t give up. I keep going at it until I get it.”
So what does she want to be when she grows up?
“I don’t know,” she replied. “Maybe something like my mom. But, I like to write a lot.”
