Man sentenced to 15 years for Beach DUI fatal accident
A Fort Myers man was sentenced to 15 years in prison Monday for a 2007 accident where two children were killed.
On Jan. 15, 2007 George W. Butler III, then 32, was traveling north in the outside lane of San Carlos Boulevard at an extreme high rate of speed when he lost control of his vehicle and crossed the northbound inside lane and center turn lane while rotating in a counter clockwise direction before striking the rear of the vehicle of James Hilliard, according to police reports.
Butler’s vehicle then continued to travel in a northwesterly direction until his front end struck the rear side of Michael Wood’s vehicle.
Butler’s vehicle continued to rotate and was struck on the right side by the vehicle of Maria Del Rosario.
Del Rosario’s vehicle overturned onto its side and contained two passengers, Jordy, 1, and Jesus Martinez, 6, to whom the accident proved fatal.
Lee County Circuit Judge Margaret Steinbeck could have sentenced Butler to over 30 years but said she believed the 15 year sentence was appropriate.
