Strolling down the Boulevard: Annual benefit pub crawl
As if you needed an excuse to bar-hop down Fort Myers Beach, the 11th annual Fort Myers Beach Pub Crawl, benefitting the Cherise Mims-Kruty Memorial Scholarship Fund, will stroll through town this weekend Saturday, June 12, beginning at the Lighthouse Tiki Bar at 6:30 p.m.
Set up by Tim Blair and Mike Powell 11 years ago and organized ever since, Mike said, “We started with 20 to 30 people on the initial crawl 11 years ago, and it was just a good chance to have a good time with friends. We chose to do it during the slow season, as some of our friends were bartenders and appreciated the business.”
From then on, the crawl did nothing but grow and expand, which makes it just that much more fun.
“I strongly suggest you get your room reservations made, as you will not be able to drive home,” Mike said.
All proceeds from the pub crawl is donated in loving memory to the Cherise Mims-Kruty Memorial Scholarship Fund, and during the event, participants can get a souvenir shirt and koozie for $25, which goes toward the fund as well.
Usually, while wearing the souvenir T-shirt during the crawl, Mike said bartenders can spot you as a fund-raiser and perhaps offer some additional specials along the way just a side bonus to the cause.
Also, Rick and Rae, owners of the Sun Deck (1051 3rd St., Fort Myers Beach SunDeckResort.com) and veteran pub-crawlers, said 5 percent of funds brought in are donated to the cause.
Prior to Cherise’s fund, for a number of years, Mike said funds raised from past pub crawls went to the fight against breast cancer, but, “Our good friend Cherise passed away a few years ago, and we donated to her scholarship fund.”
