Southwest Florida International Airport sets summer record
The Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers set a record for passengers during the summer months, according to data released by the Lee County Port Authority.
In August, 647,534 passengers traveled through Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers. That was an increase of 23 percent more than the passenger traffic in August, 2019, which was the previous record.
The airport also reported a record July, with 814,471 passengers. Those figures eclipsed the previous July record of 2019 when 570,977 passengers went through its gates, for a 30% increase.
June’s numbers were rather similar for the airport with a record 839,377 passengers. That was up 30% from the June, 2019 record.
The record amount of traffic for any single month at Southwest Florida International Airport was in March of 2019, when 1.48 million passengers passed through.
Year-to-date, passenger traffic is up 66.7 percent at the airport compared to last year when much of airline travel ground to a halt for several months.
The traffic leader in August was Southwest Airlines with 155,548 total passengers. Rounding out the top five airlines were Delta (129,825), American (113,168), United (98,715) and JetBlue (49,646).
Last month, the Lee County Board of County Commissioners approved a $331.6 million terminal expansion of the Southwest Florida International Airport, which will focus on expanding concession space and consolidating security checkpoints.
