Fleming, Paulauskis named citizens of distinction
Fort Myers Beach Council recognizes pair for work on #WeAreFMB effort
The Fort Myers Beach Council named residents Jan Fleming and Janeen Paulauskis as the recipients of the town’s 2021 Citizen of Distinction Award.
Mayor Ray Murphy cited a letter from former Mayor Anita Cereceda in recommending the two for the award. Cereceda gave credit to Fleming and Paulauskis for being “instrumental in making the #WeAreFMB effort a success.”
Fleming and Paulauskis helped launch the fundraising drive in the early weeks of the pandemic last year to support island hospitality workers who were left without jobs. Shirts with the words #WeAreFMB were printed and sold, with the proceeds used to purchase Publix gift cards for hospitality workers on the island. Tens of thousands of dollars have been raised as part of the effort with the sale of shirts, hats and other items with the logo “#WeAreFMB.”
“That effort could not have happened without the determination and resources of Janeen Paulauskis and the boots on the ground and bicycle of Jan Fleming,” Cereceda wrote.
Murphy and the council presented the Citizen of Distinction Award to the two at the council’s most recent meeting Thursday.
