With the U.S. Postal Service branch at Down by the Sea closing last week, the Pack N Ship store in the rear of Santini Plaza is the closest spot to go for those looking to send out the mail.

Though not an official Post Office branch, the store can handle the shipping of USPS and Fed Ex packages. Both the USPS and FedEx pick up shipments from the store for mail and packages.

They even handle faxes.

Mark Johnson of Fort Myers Beach stopped by Friday to send out a fax at the store. Johnson said it was his first time utilizing the business.

“I didn’t even know she was here and I am really glad she is here because the Post Office is closed. I didn’t know where I could get a fax sent or copies made. I am delighted she is here. She should do very well,” Johnson said.

Owner Dorene Cain opened the Pack N Ship business in January. A local Realtor, the Fort Myers Beach resident said she also operates a similar business in her native Illinois. She said she has approval for Post Office boxes though she hasn’t received word on when Pack N Ship will have the boxes available.

David Walton, a spokesperson for the United States Postal Service, was unable to confirm the status of any applications to the Post Office.

Cain is hopeful for more business now that the closest Post Office brances are about five miles down the road on the north end or the opposite way in Bonita Springs. “Our location has thrown people threw a loop a little bit,” she said. The store is adjacent to Fish-Tale Waterfront Dining.

“We do packaging as well. There is no charge. We will box it up,” Cain said. The store can also arrange the pick up of packages from the homes of people unable to carry the boxed and send them.

Pack N Ship is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The store is closed Wednesdays and Sundays.
