Minor League baseball returns to Fort Myers

Class-A affiliate of Twins to hold home opener Tuesday at Hammond Stadium

By Staff | May 10, 2021

The Miracle have left but the Mighty Mussels have arrived in their place at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers for the minor league baseball season.

With a new name and class designation, the low class-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins will kick off their home opener this Tuesday, May 11 at CenturyLink Sports Complex against the Clearwater Threshers (Phillies).

The minor leagues underwent a restructuring during the COVID-19 pandemic, in which teams in the Florida State League went from being class-A advanced teams to low class-A. The league is now known as the low-A southeast.

There was no minor league baseball last year due to the pandemic. In 2019, the Fort Myers Miracle finished second in the Florida State League, finishing second in the south division. They won the league title in 2018. Members of the 2019 club included current major leaguers Randy Dobnak, Akil Badoo and Ryan Jeffers. Top prospects Royce Lewis and Trevor Larnach were also on the 2019 squad.

This year’s roster includes 2020 first round pick Aaron Sabato, a first baseman and designated hitter. Sabato batted .325 with 20 home runs over 75 games at the University of North Carolina. The team also features infielder Keoni Cavaco, a 2019 first-round pick.

The season will feature 13 fireworks shows, 11 free giveaways and over 20 theme nights.

Post-game fireworks will take place after all ten Friday night contests, as well as on opening night and Fourth of July weekend (July 2-4).

In addition to fireworks on opening night, the Mussels will be giving away magnet schedules while also guaranteeing a win. If the Mussels fail to convert on a win, everyone in attendance will receive a free ticket to the following game on May 12.

Other promotions include FSW Night (May 13) and Star Wars Night (May 14). The first 1,000 fans will receive a Mussel Man bobblehead on Saturday, May 15.

The Mussels will honor all first responders on opening weekend with a $5 ticket for the games on May 14-16 by showing their employee ID at the Mussels Box office.

There will be a chance to meet Kate Flannery of “The Office” on June 4 as part of “The Office Night” promotion.

First pitch of the Mussels’ homer opener at Hammond Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11. Tickets are available through Mightymussels.com.

Fans will be required to wear their masks in the stadium except when in their seats.
