Ray Rodriguez (R-Fort Myers) will move from the State House to the State Senate.

State Rep. Ray Rodrigues (R-Estero) has won the Florida Senate District 27 seat which covers most of Lee County, including Fort Myers Beach.

Rodrigues garnered 174,260 votes — 60.55 percent of the total ballots cast in Lee County. Rachel Brown (D-San Carlos Park) earned 113,533 votes or 39.45 percent of the ballots cast.

“I’m very humbled by the support that Lee County voters have shown me,” Rodrigues said. “I’m very excited about the opportunity in front of us and look forward to serving Lee County in the senate.”

Rodrigues cited a combination of factors for his victory.

“Republican have a strong edge. This is a more conservative area of the state,” he said. “It’s clear we (also) got some strong support along non-partisan voters.”

Rodrigues pointed to his experience serving in the Florida House.

“I think that experience was probably critical,” he said.

Rodrigues said his focus will be on water quality issues, being a champion of Sunshine Laws, and working to protect the most vulnerable.

“My intention will be to continue working on the priorities that I’ve been working on in the House for the last eight years,” he said.

Rodrigues voiced appreciation for his supporters, campaign volunteers and donors.

“I want to thank the voters in Lee County. It truly is humbling to have their support and have the opportunity to be their voice,” he said, adding that he will fight for those who voted for him and those who did not. “I’m going to go up there and represent our interests.”

Rachel Brown could not be reached for comment as of press time.
