Announcement on Lake Okeechobee release expected today
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be making an announcement today regarding a potential release of water from Lake Okeechobee.
“We are likely releasing water but in terms of the actual amount, we will release that on Wednesday,” Army Corps of Engineers communications specialist John Campbell said.
Campbell said the lake is “a little high” currently. He said the Army Corps of Engineers tries to maintain a water level of 12.5 feet to 15.5 feet and it currently is a little over 16 feet.
Mayor Ray Murphy said he is expecting there to be a release but unlike two years ago, he has been told that there is “not too much” of the blue-green algae in the lake to be concerned about.
“Our waters are cooling down a little bit,” he said.
