Holiday Inn Express nears completion
The busy gateway to Fort Myers Beach will be gaining another new business next month when the developers of a Holiday Inn Express & Suites plan to open at Summerlin Square Drive.
The hotel, being built by Skyline Development – a subsidiary of South Dakota-based Quest Development & Construction, is located down the road from Hampton Inn and near Gulf Waters RV Resort.
Dan Quam, Skyline Development Director of Operations, said there will be 80 rooms at the Holiday Inn Express. He is targeting an opening date for the last week of September. The company had originally projected a start date of June, though events beyond their control or foresight occurred – namely the COVID-19 pandemic. “I hope we get over this,” Quam said of the pandemic.
The company broke ground on the project in October of last year. The hotel will have an outdoor pool, indoor fitness center, meeting room, and will have several suites for families with adjoining bedrooms.
“This is the new prototype of Holiday Inn Express,” Quam said.
The company’s owner Kevin Weisbeck has ties to the area, having lived in the region, and had been looking for a location for a hotel for several years before choosing the location across from Beach Kiwanis Thrift Shop, Quam said.
“Location-wise to the beach, there are not a lot of newer branded hotels,” he said.
Quam estimated the investment of the project at around $10 million. The company has invested in hospitality projects across the country.
The hospitality industry has taken a major hit during the pandemic but Quam sees things improving. “Travel is picking back up,” he said.
