Fort Myers Beach hires communications coordinator

As part of an initiative championed by the former town council, a social media and communications coordinator has been hired by Town of Fort Myers Beach Manager Roger Hernstadt.

Jennifer Dexter, who has formerly held communications and community relations jobs in Ohio, was hired at a salary of $75,000.

Dexter began on April 6 with the town. The town council did not vote on the hiring of Dexter though the previous council had pushed for the new position last year.

“The council expressed an interest to raise the town’s profile on social media,” Hernstadt said. The town manager expects that Dexter will be able to lighten the load on town staff. According to the job description provided, Dexter’s other roles will include coordinating promotions, advertisements, presentations and community outreach to improve public awareness of town services, programs, activities, plans and projects. She may also served as the town spokesperson when directed.

Dexter will also be assisting administration by writing articles, press releases, editorials, talking points and speeches.

Among the other duties prescribed to Dexter are to develop new ways to increase online engagement, grow subscriber databases and identify content development improvements

Mayor Ray Murphy said the council voted to create the position last year of a public information officer, which has since developed into the current title. He said the board gave direction to Hernstadt to make the hire.

Murphy says he wants Dexter to be able to be able to “get the word out to what we are doing.”
