MRTF reports work in progress

Marine Resources Task Force is pleased to report to the Town Council on the projects it has taken up, progress in that regard and the status of other items that may be of interest to the Town Council. Following is a list and update on each. MRTF welcomes direction from Town Council on any of these issues.

– Beach Raking Permit Review – MRTF approved the new wording suggested by Town Staff for the Beach Raking Permit section of the LDC. This revision of the LDC will be forwarded to Town Council for consideration along with the recommendation of charging $25 per parcel to be raked for each permit holder.

– Recycling Bins at Beach Accesses – The six-month trial period for recycling bins is complete. Cathie Lewis will give a presentation to MRTF on the findings of this trial period, and future plans for permanent implementation of recycling at beach accesses at the May meeting.

– Adopt a Beach Program – Vice Chair Dan Andre was informed by Lee County that a Town of Fort Myers Beach Adopt a Beach program would not conflict with the county’s program. Mr. Andre will develop a proposal for review at the May meting.

– Distribution plan for “Your guide to Seagrass and its importance” – Al Durrett reported that these brochures are continuing to receive widespread distribution and favorable responses.

– Publicizing the need to dredge New Pass and Big Carlos Pass – Environmental Services Coordinator Keith Laakkonen reported that there are no plans to dredge either New Pass or Big Carlos Pass. However, the town is receiving qualifications from engineering firms for developing a model for a management plan for Big Carlos Pass.

– Mobile educational outreach displays for special events – Julie Schwab will contact town staff to determine what signage is needed on the town’s emergency management trailer so it can be used for MRTF educational outreach activities.

– Little Estero Island CWA Management Plan – Keith Laakkonen reported the he is working with the state to find a lead agency to develop a Critical Wildlife Area management plan.
