Larry George Kitchen obit

Mar 15, 2011

Larry George Kitchen (Jan. 24, 1934 to Feb. 13, 2011) passed away after a tragic fall while vacationing in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011.

Born in Ames, Iowa to George and Ann Kitchen, Larry married Janice Kay Ritter on Jan. 18, 1957. They had two children, Debra (Paul) Winchester of Bargersville, Ind. and Jeff (Kristi) Kitchen of Fort McDowell, Ariz.; and four grandchildren, Matt and Anna Winchester and William and Katelyn Kitchen. Larry had two brothers, Lowell Kitchen (deceased) and Tom Kitchen of Des Moines, Iowa.

Larry attended Clear Lake High School and the University of Iowa before graduating from Drake University in 1959. He served two years in the U.S. Army prior to college and was stationed in Germany for part of his service.

Upon college graduation, Larry went to work for the Banker’s Life Company / Principal Financial Group, where he retired as Manager of Group Sales after a 38-year career. In 1996, he and wife Jan moved to Fort Myers Beach for retirement. They often wintered in Puerto Vallarta.

Larry will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and his many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Lowell.

Larry loved people and was a man of faith of Christ. He found goodness in everyone and considered strangers simply as friends he had yet to meet. He enjoyed any new adventure and loved to laugh and tease. He was a loving spouse, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Larry leaves the world a better place and set the bar a little higher for us all.

A Celebration of Life was held at Chapel by the Sea on March 7, where a memorial has been established in his name.
