Part of our Getting to Know Our World series, Miffy Greer shares the customs of the people and what to expect when visiting Singapore on Jan 13.

The dialogue on Jan. 14 revolves around a special conversation between Warren Fulton and David Jaffin as they explore how people today approach the language of poetry. Their time considers both traditional and modern overtures.

Artist of the Month

Featured this month are the works of seven artists from Ocean Harbor Condo who gather and come together as a group to share time and enjoy painting. Experience covers a wide range of years, and one can tell that enjoying the journey is clearly their treat. Subject matter and use of colors shrouds a wide spectrum of ideas and approaches so give yourself time to soak in the diversity.

Delightful Display

There’s a real treat in displays this month. In the Senior Zone case, artist Cris Zack features art created from men’s neckties. Yes, you read correctly, from ties. You’ll find pillows, handbags, greetings cards and misc items that may enlist both delight and amazement in how a common item can be so transformed.

Cris’ talents are further in evidence as you look at the hand-painted silk scarves in the display case at the top of the stairs. The scarves are in a rain water motif.

Ward Jenkins once said that photographers “point their lenses toward every single corner of our world and somehow make the mundane mesmerizing through their artistic eye. It’s all a matter of being aware of your surroundings and realizing that there are some really amazing and interesting things to look at, even if it may just be something so simple as a wall being covered up by paint.” Cris gives meaning to this. Enjoy the displays.

Library Expansion

Continuing from last week, the expansion will include a mobile computer lab with computer workstations and a central instructor’s station for conducting classes. Users will be able to learn the essentials of computer hardware and software in a hands-on environment. Studies show that when you are at a keyboard and actually trying what is being discussed, it tends to come quicker and stay longer.

Library Hours

When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours of operation, either on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9-5; and Saturday 9-1. We look forward to seeing you.
