4. Educate the public on the dangers of drunk driving.

This weekend’s checkpoint involved members of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Fort Myers Police Department, Cape Coral Police Department, and the Florida Department of Transportation.

On Saturday, Nov. 13th 2010, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit PILS section and the Lee County Coalition for a Drug Free Southwest Florida hosted Operation Medicine Cabinet (formerly Operation Prescription Clean Out). The focus of this operation was to have the public turn in any unused prescription medications at three locations in Lee County. This is part of an ongoing effort to keep these medications from getting into the hands of the youth in the community and to properly dispose of them without harming the environment. Assisting in the operation were representatives from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Evidence Section and volunteers assigned to the V.O.I.C.E Unit.

The three drop off locations in Lee County were:

1.Winn Dixie Shopping Plaza on Homestead Road in Lehigh Acres.

2. Regal Cinemas at Coconut Point Shopping Plaza in Estero.

3. Wal Mart Super Center on Del Prado Boulevard in Cape Coral.

The combined total number of pharmaceuticals turned in at the three locations is as follows:

Pills: 57,174

Liquids: 50

Creams: 107

Syringes: 71

Patches: 500

Inhalers: 598

Powders: 44

As in previous years, this operation was a huge success.
