Fired town manager sorting options

By Staff | Jul 23, 2009

Fort Myers Beach Town Manager Scott Janke, who was was fired “without cause” at an emergency council meeting Tuesday night, is talking things over with family members as he decides what to do in the wake of the unexpected termination.

“At this point I don’t have a reaction,” said Janke in a phone interview. “My wife and I are talking and we will figure these things out.”

The council’s emergency meeting was called after board members received media inquiries concerning online media reports that Janke’s wife, Anabela Mota Janke, is involved in the adult entertainment industry under the stage name Jazella Moore.

Janke said at this point, he doesn’t have any idea of what to do next.

Because he did not attend last night’s emergency meeting, Janke had no comment on whether his personal life could have any affect on his ability to perform as town manager, as some council members had expressed.

“I have no idea. I wasn’t there, I have no comment on that subject,” he said.

Mayor Larry Kiker, who called the emergency meeting, stressed that neither Scott Janke nor his wife have done anything illegal.

“If you look at it, the man didn’t do anything illegal,” said Kiker. “But it’s obvious what the issue is.”

Reaction was mixed among council members, Kiker said. He added that the information reported on Adult Industry News was verified but that, overall, Janke was an effective town manager.

“Mr. Janke has done a pretty good job,” said Kiker.

The Town Council voted 5-0 to terminate Janke and gave him a severance package worth of six months of salary and health benefits. According to Kiker, the salary portion of the contract is approximately $50,000.

Janke, a 20-year veteran of the public sector, began working on Fort Myers Beach on March 5, 2008. Before that he worked as city manager at the City of Marathon in the Keys and had served various the public administration positions throughout the State of Alaska since 1989.
