MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — A U.S. Marine from North Fort Myers killed in Afghanistan Wednesday had numerous service-related decorations in nearly eight years of service.
Sgt. Michael C. Roy, 25, who died while supporting combat operations in Nimroz province, received a Navy Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, three Navy Meritorious Unit Commendations, two Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, four Sea Service Deployment Ribbons and NATO Medal-ISAF Afghanistan.
Roy joined the Marine Corps on Sept. 25, 2001, and was trained as a rifleman. He was promoted to sergeant on Oct. 10, 2005, joining the Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command on March 15, 2008. He was assigned to 3rd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Marine Special Operations Advisor Group, MARSOC, at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
