Open water championships results

Philippe Debreuil of Team Canada blew away the rest of the field for the victory in the 10K Open Water Championships last Sunday.

Two U.S. Olympians competed in the 2009 USA Swimming Open Water Festival in the Gulf near Lynn Hall Park on Fort Myers Beach this past weekend.

Californians Mark Warkentin of Santa Barbara and Chloe Sutton of Mission Veigo both competed in the first-ever 10K open water swim at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

On the Beach, Warkentin placed a disappointing eighth among the men in Sunday’s 10-kilometer national championships, while Sutton won the women’s division in the 5-kilometer nationals and placed fourth among the women in the 10K national championships.

The two prestigious swimming events were preceded by three Open Water Junior Olympics events, the Senior Open Water Championships and a Duathlon.

Here are the top five finishers for men and women in the 5K and 10K national championships:
