Swimming championships will make waves on Beach

The 2009 USA Swimming Open Water Festival will take place in the Gulf near Lynn Hall Park on Fort Myers Beach this weekend.

Before the actual swimming, the festival begins Friday with a 9 a.m. technical meeting for USA Swimming 5K at Bay Oaks Recreation Center. The national championships for that class will be held at 3 p.m. At 5 p.m., there will be an Open Water Clinic with the U.S. National Team. It is free to all event entrants.

On Saturday, there will be three Open Water Junior Olympics before the Senior Open Water Championships and the Duathlon, featuring a 1.5-k run and a 400-meter swim.

On Sunday, the USA Swimming 10K National Championships begin at 8 a.m.

followed by the USMS Masters Mile (Florida vs. Florida Gold Coast Challenge).
