Making Reading Enjoyable for Children
“If a child in your family struggles with reading, you should know about the beneficial effects dogs can have on that child’s ability to learn,” starts a heading in Family Matters: Parenting, on page 202 of the March 2009 issue of Better Homes and Gardens.
The article quotes a mother who saw a child curled up with a dog, stroking its head and reading the animal a book. It was the first she had seen of the program, in which early readers read aloud to a therapy dog-one trained to sit quietly and accept a stranger’s touch. In the ensuing weeks, her son, who loves dogs, selected books to be ready to read to the dog. “He worked hard because he wanted to be ready to read to the dog. It turned his motivation around 180 degrees,” she says.
We have sponsored this Dog Day program for the last few years at the Beach Library and have likewise witnessed the wonders that happens in a gentle and assuring way to encourage literacy. Once each month, a dog handler and dog visit and children have the opportunity to spend 10 minutes with them. It has brought great results.
Dog Day is the third Thursday of each month, and this month it’s March 19 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sign up your child for a time that day.
