Florida Gulf Coast University Division of Justice Studies, in collaboration with Continuing Education and Off-Campus Programs, and in partnership with Lee County Sheriff’s Office, present a series of free continuing education programs offering practical guidelines for practitioners and the public seeking an in-depth understanding of issues and actions related to human trafficking.

This year the series kicks off with a presentation titled, “Agricultural Trafficking: A Human Rights Approach to its Recognition, Response and Prevention,” 8 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Jan. 29, at the Sugden Welcome Center. FGCU President Wilson G. Bradshaw will welcome guests with opening remarks at 8:30 a.m.

Presenters include Laura Germino and Julia Perkins of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, and Maria Jose Fletcher, supervising attorney and director of the Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center in Miami.

Presenters will describe slavery in the agricultural industry, nationally and locally; discuss the particulars of working with farm worker survivors of trafficking and describe the legal and social needs of victims and immigration perspectives.

The program is free and open to the public. Continental breakfast will be served prior to the presentation, 8 to 8:30 a.m.

Social workers and licensed mental health counselors can obtain three contact hours.
