Boat Smart Course

The San Carlos Bay Sail and Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, will be offering a Boat Smart course on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.This course is recognized by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators. Each student will receive a certificate from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission upon completion of the course. The course consists of two sessions on consecutives Saturdays. The second session will be on Saturday, Feb. 28 also 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Topics covered include hull design, docking, anchoring, handling boating emergencies, reading channel markers and many other topics to make each boating experience safer and more enjoyable.

The cost of the class is $40 with a $20 cost for a second person sharing the instruction materials.

The class is being taught at the San Carlos Bay Sail and Power Squadron Classroom located at 16048 San Carlos Blvd. at the corner of Kelly Road (across from ACE Hardware). Students can register online at www.scbps.com or call the office 239-466-4040.

Digital charting course for boaters

The San Carlos Bay Sail and Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, will be offering a Digital Charting Course on Saturday, Feb.7 from 1:15 p.m. to 4 p.m. This class will introduce you to the newest electronic tools for navigation. Using Maptech software and NOAA government charts, you will learn how to use this technology. There will be hands-on exercises (both paper and digital). You must know how to read a chart (if not, take our Local Waters/Local Charts course). Now with a lot less effort, you can enter waypoints, plan routes, compute distances, and print your entire trip. You can even load a plan into your GPS. We will be using chart 11427 and you must bring yours to class. If you have a notebook/laptop, bring it to class and we will load the Maptech software on your machine. The cost of the class is $40 and includes handouts, Chart Smart Book and MapTech/USPS CD.

Local waters/local charts class

The San Carlos Bay Sail and Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, will be offering the popular local waters/local charts class. The class will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7 from 8:15 a.m. until noon. The class is directed towards new boaters and boaters new to the area, as well as those wishing to learn chart reading. It will provide the boater with some of the basics of navigation, oriented to the Fort Myers area. Students will be using chart 11427 and you must bring this chart to class.

The cost of the class is $40.
