Marine task force awards prizes for catchy slogans
Fort Myers Beach Mayor Larry Kiker and town attorney Anne Dalton were on hand at last week’s Marine Resources Task Force meeting to award three case prizes and one honorable mention to winners of a contest for slogans urging residents and visitors not to litter on area beaches.
First place for the slogan, “Help the cause! No lids – no straws,” was won by Vince Titus who was awarded $100 by the town; second place for the slogan, “Don’t litter – it kills critters,” was won by Emry Elrubaie who received $50 and third place for the slogan, “Stay and play – but please throw your trash away,” was won by Bryanna Walker.
Both Elrubaie and Walker are students at Fort Myers Beach Elementary School.
Sherrill Diehl was awarded honorable mention for her entry slogan, “Reach to teach – no litter on the Beach.”
The contest, headed up by task force member Jay Light, was developed as a part of a program to reduce litter, especially plastic straws and lids, from beaches on Estero Island.
Light used the slogans for posters that were given to local merchants for display.
“I’m pleased to report that I’ve finished distributing all of the signs with 150 signs given out to 56 different participating establishments,” Light said, adding that all businesses that took part in the program will be issued certificates of appreciation from the town.
Light said rules of the contest did not limit contestants’ age, “and two winners turned out to be kids,”
