First Christian Church to host Yellow Ribbon Rally

By Staff | Jan 22, 2009

A nationally renowned preacher is coming to Cape Coral, and with him he will bring a message of support and honor for America’s troops currently serving overseas.
Echoing the sentiments of Tony Orlando’s “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Around the Old Oak Tree,” Dr. Cecil Todd’s Yellow Ribbon Rally will make its Southwest Florida debut at First Christian Church on Sunday, recognizing the efforts of the men and women of the armed forces.
Todd’s Revival Fire Ministry, located in Branson, Mo., has carried the Yellow Ribbon Rally around the country, having made stops at locations all across the Southeast and Midwest.
Dr. Keith Kruger of First Christian Church invited Todd to speak in the Cape.
“He (Dr. Cecil Todd) is a friend of our pastor,” said Skip Petteys. “He called and asked if he would want to do a rally at our church.”
Petteys said he is unsure of how many people, outside of the church’s regular congregation, will show for the event. This is the first major national event hosted by First Christian Church.
Petteys added that he did not personally know anyone in the armed forces, but it did nothing to quell his desire to honor those who have sacrificed for the nation.
“I believe the service men don’t get enough recognition,” he said. “This is all new and foreign to the church. It’s a different kind of outreach for us. It’s more of an honor than an outreach.”
There are three services featuring the Yellow Ribbon Rally. Each service will be a mirror on the others, focusing on Todd’s message of “Wake Up America — Land That We Love!”
According to Petteys, Todd has raised funds for and distributed “hundreds of thousands” of Bibles to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
That drive and devotion to the troops is what makes the program so unique, and what pulled First Christian Church into the Todd’s Yellow Ribbon fold.
“This is the first time we’ve endeavored to do something of this nature,” he said.
The Yellow Ribbon Rally is a non-denominational gathering open and free to the public. For more information, contact the church office at 574-7272.
