A sobriety checkpoint conducted late Friday and early Saturday resulted in four DUI arrests.

The checkpoint was conducted at Hancock Bridge Parkway at Orange Grove Boulevard in North Fort Myers.

The checkpoint was held with the assistance of numerous law enforcement agencies, support organizations and personnel including volunteers. The following are the results of the activity:

DUI Arrests: 4

No Valid Driver’s License: 1

Driving While License Suspended: 1

Arrests on other charges: 1

Citations issued: 9

Vehicles through checkpoint: 424

The primary emphasis for checkpoints is to:

1. Remove impaired drivers from the roadway

2. Reduce the likelihood impaired drivers will operate their vehicles on our roadways

3. Heighten public awareness

4. Educate the public on the dangers of drunk driving.

The checkpoint was the second night in a row the Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit coordinated with neighboring agencies in a focused effort. On Thursday, Nov. 20, the Multi-Jurisdictional Traffic Task Force completed a saturation patrol in the vicinity of Ben Hill Griffin Parkway. Participating law enforcement included members from the Sheriff’s Office, Florida Gulf Coast University Police Department, Cape Coral Police Department and Florida Highway Patrol. By early Friday morning, 76 citations and 64 warnings were issued along with one DUI arrest.

The checkpoint operation was a part of a continuing commitment by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit to get impaired drivers off county roadways and in support of education and enforcement efforts such as the national campaign “Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest”.

Daily enforcement, sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols by deputies with the Sheriff’s Office are a part of on-going efforts to curb traffic fatalities, injuries and crashes in Lee County. Various community partnerships, including planned DUI sobriety checkpoints, are established with the goal of educating and informing the public on traffic safety issues.
