Cape High students earn Sunshine State Scholars recognition

By Staff | Nov 20, 2008

Two students from Cape Coral High School were recently named Sunshine State Scholars for their outstanding achievement in mathematics and science.

Earlier this year, high schools competed in an assessment and the results were submitted to the district. Cape Coral High students Kyle Raney and Jack Jones received the highest scores in Lee County.

All district finalists receive a certificate of participation while Raney and Jones received a plaque.

In January both students will move on to compete in the regional competition. If they place well regionally, they move on to the state competition in March.

“They’re both brilliant,” said Cape Coral High Principal Eric McFee. “They’re regular high school kids but they are so smart.”

The Sunshine State Scholars program was created in 1998 to promote interest and involvement in learning. McFee said Cape Coral schools have never sent students to the competition before.

“The whole faculty was real excited about that,” said McFee. “It has always been from schools someplace else.”

Mcfee also credited Cape Coral High’s success in the Sunshine State Scholars Program with the district’s school choice program. It allows students to choose between various schools based on what they are interested in learning.

“Making a balance in all three zones and allowing high schools to do academies has really helped to increase student interest,” said McFee. “The kids are here and enjoying it, and they are top-notch kids.”

Former district scholars include Alicia Gaidry from Cypress Lake High and Xu (David) Huang from Fort Myers High.
