Police: Two teens arrested after attack on Cape officer
Two men were charged with beating and robbing an off-duty Cape Coral officer who was jogging early Thursday morning.
Houston Wayne Wimbish of 611 S.E. Fifth St. and William Wendell Dasher of 1405 S.W. Ninth Court, both 19, were charged with robbery and aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer.
Wimbish and Dasher approached Officer Michael Filak in a black sports car while he was jogging in the 900 block of Southwest 13th Street at about 1:30 a.m. They demanded Filak give them his cell phone, said city spokesperson Connie Barron.
Filak showed his police identification and told Wimbish and Dasher to leave, but they attacked him, beating him in the face and kicking him in the head, Barron said.
Filak defended himself with a knife and injured the suspects, at which point they fled, according to a police report.
Police responded to Dasher’s home in reference to an alleged battery, where Wimbish reportedly told police an unknown white male attacked Dasher with a knife. Dasher reportedly had several injuries consistent with stabs from a knife.
Filak made a separate 911 call from 1318 S.W. 10th Place, and police responded to the address.
Police believed the two calls were related.
The suspects were arrested, and Filak and Dasher were taken to the Cape Coral Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Both have since been released from the hospital, Barron said.
Wimbish and Dasher were being held without bond Thursday at the Lee County Jail, according to booking records.
