A motorcyclist was listed in serious condition at Lee Memorial Hospital on Thursday after a Wednesday evening accident in Cape Coral.

The man’s blood alcohol content was nearly three times the legal limit of .08, according to city spokesperson Connie Barron. Initial tests showed Gates had a blood alcohol content of approximately .215.

James Gates, 50, of 194 Elburg Drive, North Fort Myers, was initially listed in life-threatening condition and was unresponsive after the accident, which happened at about 5:50 p.m. on Pine Island Road near the old Albertson’s Supermarket, Barron said.

Police said Gates turned right onto Pine Island Road and pulled into the left lane, apparently observing several stopped vehicles in front of him. Gates reportedly braked with his front brake, attempting to turn right, which caused the motorcycle to rotate clockwise and roll left.

Gates sustained a head injury from striking the cement and was partially ejected from the motorcycle before coming to rest in the westbound lane, police said. Gates was not wearing a helmet.

The motorcycle struck the rear bumper of a stopped minivan before coming to a rest. The driver of the minivan, Dwight E. Conrad, 83, of Fort Myers, was not injured in the accident.
