A Cape Coral teen was arrested and charged with robbery Tuesday in relation to a purse-snatching that occurred near the Coralwood Mall earlier this month.

Leandro Jose Sabado, 16, of 4821 Tarpon Court, Apt. A, reportedly admitted to driving the vehicle Miguel Taveras, 17, rode in before and after robbing a woman of her purse in the 2100 block of Southeast 16th Place on Sept. 5.

Taveras was charged with robbery without a firearm on Sept. 11 and is currently being held in juvenile detention, according to booking records.

At about 7:55 p.m., the victim and her friend were walking from the Coralwood Mall when an Hispanic male exited a dark green Isuzi and demanded the woman give him her purse, she and her friend reportedly told police.

The victim and witness identified Taveras in a police photo line-up as the individual who grabbed the victim and took her purse, according to reports.

Taveras reportedly told police he exited the vehicle, took the purse and left in the same vehicle, driven by Sabado. He said he told Sabado he would rob the woman and to pull over prior to robbing her, according to police.

Taveras reportedly said he pocketed $11, a phone and a ring before tossing the purse into a canal from the vehicle’s window. The stolen items had an estimated total value of $52.

Sabado told police when he looked back after driving off, the woman and her friend “looked scared and upset,” police reported.

Sabado was transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center in apparent good health, police said.
