A hit-and-run driver was detained Tuesday with the help of a Cape Coral man after the driver hit several mailboxes and ended up in the man’s backyard, police said.

Stephen Leroy Wright, 54, of Cocoa, Fla., was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage after a witness reportedly said he struck three mailboxes along El Dorado Boulevard West and a street sign. Wright then swerved left through a median, drove between the yards of 818 and 822 El Dorado Parkway and stopped in the backyard of one home, according to reports.

A fence at 818 El Dorado Parkway was damaged by Wright’s vehicle as well, police said.

A resident at 822 El Dorado Parkway was eating dinner on his back lanai when he saw Wright drive into his backyard and stop, according to reports. Wright attempted to leave and the resident came outside asking Wright to exit the vehicle. When he refused, the resident removed Wright from the car and detained him until police arrived.

Police said they smelled alcohol on Wright’s breath and his speech was hard to understand.

Wright reportedly said he “should not have been driving” and he was “only trying to park his vehicle,” though he did not admit to being in an accident.

Wright was given a blood test due to suspicions of impairment, and the results of that test were pending Wednesday afternoon.

Police said Wright was additionally given visual tests after he was taken to the hospital, and he showed signs of intoxication. Wright was later medically cleared and taken to the Lee County Jail.

The damages are estimated at $100 to each mailbox, $100 to the street sign and $500 to the fence.
