Fire on county border still contained

By Staff | Apr 4, 2008

A fire that sparked up from what officials say is likely Tuesday lightning storms on the Lee-Charlotte county border remained entirely contained Thursday afternoon.

Chief Craig Abberbach with the Cape Coral Fire Department said afternoon showers were a factor in helping extinguish the blaze. The rain helped by saturating the ground.

The fire burned a total of 46 acres east of Burnt Store Road in the Cape near the county border.

The Florida Department of Forestry and area firefighters contained the fire Wednesday afternoon. They left the affected area at about 5:30 p.m. due to the fire being contained and the imminent danger of approaching lightning storms, said Abberbach.

When forestry workers returned Thursday morning to check on the area, the fire was 100 percent contained. DOF remains confident it will be extinguished unless lightning again becomes a factor, he said.
