A Cape Coral mother was arrested Tuesday in relation to the thefts of two golf carts from a local business.

The woman’s children were suspected in the thefts, but when the youth brought the carts home, she did not return them to the owner and actively tried to conceal the carts, she reportedly told officers.

Cassy W. Ridgway, 27, of 632 N.W. First Lane, has been charged with the theft of two golf carts from Danny Yates Landscaping, at 425 Pine Island Road. The carts are valued between $300 and $5,000, according to a police report.

Danny Yates, owner of the burglarized landscaping business, reportedly told officers that at 5:30 p.m. on a previous date, some stole two golf carts from his business. Yates had video surveillance of the thefts, police said.

Yates said he talked to nearby residents which lead him to Ridgway’s home, but when he spoke with her she denied knowledge of the thefts and said only that she saw “a few kids from the neighborhood” riding on a golf cart, police reported.

Police reportedly found the stolen carts in the bushes at Northwest Seventh Place and Northwest First Terrace while driving to Ridgway’s home.

Officers then made contact with Ridgway, who reportedly admitted she thought the carts were stolen when her children brought them home, despite her daughter’s story they belonged to a friend.

Ridgway said she rode around in the carts with her children in the neighborhood and then concealed them in the garage, police reported.

When Yates approached Ridgway about the thefts, she was sure they were stolen but did not want to get into trouble, telling her daughter to “get rid of the carts,” she reportedly told officers.

Ridgway was taken to the Lee County Jail in apparent good health, officials said.
