Derrick and the Motowners set to perform at Cape High; Show is last in series to benefit charity

By Staff | Apr 1, 2008

The Knights of Columbus 7131 is set to host the last in a series of four shows on Saturday. The event will feature Derrick and the Motowners, who originally hail from Manhattan, N.Y.

“It is going to be a really great show,” said Joe Vieceli, member and events chairman of the Knights of Columbus 7131. “The whole show will really have people moving.”

For the last 27 years, the Knights of Columbus 7131 has awarded the money raised from ticket sales from the shows to local charities. Some of the charities that have received donations from the KOC include visually impaired organizations, St. Vincent De Paul, Lee County Veterans Outreach, fire victims, Hope Hospice, Salvation Army, Gabriel House for Abused Women, Tender Loving Care, St. Andrew Church and Cape Coral Cyclones.

Last year the organization was able to donate $5,000 to these charities. This year, however, the Knights of Columbus 7131 has not raised nearly that amount. Vieceli attributes the low tickets sales to the economy.

“The economy has hit people really hard,” he said. “If people have $24, what are they gonna spend it on, tickets to a show or a half a bag of groceries?”

Even though attendance for shows has been down, the organization has not increased its tickets prices.

“Even though all our expenses went up this year, we still didn’t increase our price,” said Vieceli. “We went people to be able to come out and see a good show.”

Derrick and the Motowners is a four-member band that performs a variety of music from the Motown era, including covers of such groups as the Platters and the Temptations.

Viecelli said the last number the group performs for the night is the song “Shout,” originally done by the Temptations.

“That song will get everyone out of their seat jumping around,” he said.

The Knights of Columbus 7131 are already planning the next round of shows, scheduled to start again in January.

Tickets for Derrick and the Motowners are $12 per person and can be purchased at Russell’s Quick Print Inc., at 3013 Del Prado Blvd., or Cape Scooter & Mower, at 93 Country Club Blvd.

The show will be held at 7 p.m. at Cape Coral High School, at 2300 Santa Barbara Blvd. For more information, contact Vieceli at 542-5099.
