Cape Coral students who have the desire to lead an exciting life in the spotlight will now have the opportunity to hone their skills this summer in a two-week intensive musical theater program called the “Broadway Bound Musical Theater Intensive,” running June 9-20.

The program’s director, Cape Coral resident Chad Murnane, was hired by the Cape Coral Academy of Music to oversee the program and draw on his 12 years of experience to assist local students in developing their craft.

“The point of this intensive is to nurture young talent and help the children to own the craft,” said Murnane.

Murnane, who is just 17, is a nationally recognized singer and actor, who won first place at the national Access Broadway in 2007. He is currently studying at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan — a premiere arts boarding high school.

He will be working with Danielle Dragoni, a recent graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. Recently, she performed in the American Family Theatre’s national tour of “Aladdin,” and she also had roles in “The Wizard of Oz,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and others.

The two will be working alongside other professionals from the local area and New York City, referred to by Murnane as “triple threats” — performers who can sing, dance and act — in the intensive program.

“We are looking for very dedicated kids,” said Murnane. “It’s going to be an awesome intensive.”

The program will include classes from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. In the morning there will be an ensemble that features warm-up activities in improvisation, theatre movement and workshops and may feature some special guest artists.

Throughout the rest of the day, students will take core classes in acting, dancing and voice. Acting classes explore techniques and methods using monologues, and studying scenes and techniques for auditions. Dance classes will train students in forms of ballet, tap and jazz, and vocal classes will include solo and ensemble performances where students are individually coached.

Collaboration productions also allow students in the program to combine and practice all three forms of musical theater using Broadway production numbers.

Instructors in the program are trained in all forms of musical theater. They include actress/singer Alexandra Alvarez, who is an Ida S. Baker High School graduate; singer/actress/dancer Kristen Licata, who graduated from Cypress Lake High’s Center for the Arts and has performed locally at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre; and dancer Elisa Eichbauer, who was trained in dance and acrobatics at the Robin Dawn Academy of Performing Arts in Cape Coral and has appeared locally at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre.
