Funeral arrangements have been made for a Lee County sheriff’s sergeant who lost his life to what is believed to be a heart attack during a county police and fire charity football game.

Services for Sgt. Mark Niedermeyer will be held at the First Christian Church of Fort Myers, at 2061 McGregor Blvd., Friday night and Saturday morning, according to LCSO spokesperson Tony Schall.

A viewing will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., with a visitation Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon, when the funeral service begins.

Niedermeyer, 44, lost his life while participating in the 11th Annual Charity Bowl Football at the Lee Civic Center in North Fort Myers on Friday night, said Schall.

He joined the sheriff’s office in 1994 and worked with the Narcotics and Vice Unit before becoming a corrections internal affairs investigator. Niedermeyer, who lived in North Fort Myers, is survived by his wife and three children.

“He was a dedicated and true law enforcement professional and a devoted husband and father,” said Schall. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. Sgt. Niedermeyer will be greatly missed by everyone at the agency.”
