The tremors from the coronavirus outbreak continue to reverberate as the Town of Fort Myers Beach Council rescinded the permit for the Lion's Club's Shrimp Festival scheduled for this weekend.

Fort Myers Beach Vice Mayor Ray Murphy also announced that he has cancelled the St. Patrick's Day Parade for March 17. "It was not a hard decision to make," Murphy said. He said he was following the lead of Naples, which also cancelled their parade and other events that have been cancelled as a result of coronavirus.

Otherwise, businesses on the beach will be operating as normal this weekend, said Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce President Jacki Liszak. "It's very disappointing for everybody," she said on the cancellations. "I'm concerned for the Lion's Club, I'm concerned for our businesses. I want people to know that our businesses and beaches are open."

Liszak said that hotels and restaurants are busy. "We're packed down here," she said.
