Cornhole Fur A Cause registration under way

By Staff | Jan 16, 2019

Help support a local organization that provides assistance to those four legged companions in need by registering for a cornhole tournament.

Brandi Bauer, the founder of the nonprofit, Food Fur A Cause, has always had a huge love for animals. She recalls always having dogs around while growing up, some found on the street that would end up in her and her siblings’ beds sleeping with them. Fast forward, Bauer began going to rescues and shelters to find her companions.

“It’s a way that I can give back to the community,” she said. “I feel we are all put on this earth to help each other out. Humans can take care of themselves if they are put up to the challenge of it. Animals don’t have a lot of choices in their lives.”

The nonprofit provides food to local shelters, rescues, foster families and families that are need of food for their furry companions. The organization also provides veterinarian funds for those rescues that find an animal in dire need of life saving measures.

“It’s a fairly new organization. I didn’t start fundraising until the beginning of 2018,” Bauer said.

With that said, Bauer said she is pretty excited about her first fundraising event, Cornhole Fur A Cause, a cornhole tournament being held Saturday, Jan. 19, at The Beach Bar. Registration begins at noon, or can be done by emailing foodfuracause@gmail.com, and is $20.

She encourages individuals to register on time, so they can get the tournament bracket going.

The tournament will start at 1 p.m. and continue until it concludes.

“Who doesn’t love being on the beach having a few cocktails in January in Florida,” Bauer said, adding that individuals “are more than welcome to come out and watch and have really good food and cocktails.”

The event will include a random draw for teams with double elimination tournaments. There will be cash prizes for first, second and third place winners. A 50/50 raffle drawing will also be held at the end of the tournament.

The idea for the fundraiser stemmed from Bauer’s love of playing cornhole with her husband on the beach. She thought if everyone kicked in a little extra for the tournament the proceeds would go to the organization.

“What happens is the entry fee of $20 – $10 per person – goes to Food Fur A Cause and $10 goes to the entry fee,” Bauer said. “It’s pretty basic. Hopefully, I can get a good crowd here. God willing it will go over really well.”

The great thing about the fundraiser is every dollar (half of the registration fee) goes directly to the organization, she said.

“Everything donated goes directly to the vet fund, or the food fund,” she said.

“A lot of the rescues in Miami and Fort Lauderdale are fostered over here in Fort Myers and vice versa,” Bauer said.

Although she is trying to keep her assistance in Florida, she branched out after reading about a dog in Houston.

“I donated money for emergency care,” she said.

The organization also provided pet food to North Carolina and the Florida Panhandle after hurricanes impacted the area with coordination of Bailey’s Way Rescue.
