Times Square pops with new paint

Times Square has a fresh face, but you'll have to look down at your flip flops to see it. The old tiles, worn down over the years by salt and sand, have been renewed in bright shades of coral, blue, and green, just in time for busy season.

"People are definitely complimenting it. I stand out here all day," Kathy Doherty, hostess at the Sunset Beach Grille, said. Though the colors were chosen to match town hall and the city's signage, Doherty has her own interpretation of the art when her customers inquire.

"I tell them, it's the sand, the grass, and the water!" she said.

"We love it. The colors look phenomenal," said Jesus Hernandez, manager at Belladonna Pizzeria. "It looks cleaner. It's necessary for customers to come in and see fresh paint."

"It is probably one of the most highly visited areas in Southwest Florida, and this little facelift has meant a lot to all of us who work there," said Anita Cereceda, Town council member and owner of two shops in Times Square, The Pier Peddler and Local Color. "It's meant a lot to the people who visit as well, because on a daily basis, we hear compliments about how great it looks."

Town Manager Roger Hernstadt explained the project's importance. "We have to take care of our properties and infrastructure. We have to demonstrate that we're investing into the town, to our residents, visitors, and businesses, and for whatever reason, the Times Square area wasn't getting the attention it needed over the last couple of years."

The town chose Sons of Monaco through a bid process to complete the work. Anthony and Louis Monaco were born and raised on Fort Myers Beach. They started their own company in 2017, but they're no strangers to the craft. Painting is the family business - they've worked with their father under the name Monaco & Sons since the early 1990's.

The $24,975 job was one of their biggest public projects yet. It began on Sept. 26, and took a week of coordinating with businesses to section off the sidewalk and spray it down with paint.

"We were trying to sandwich it into the slowest period of time so it would have the least impact on businesses there," said Hernstadt.

The Monaco brothers enlisted the help of Eagle Eye Drones to create a birds-eye video for their Facebook page that would document the project before and after. As the shot pans over Times Square, the drab walkway transforms into a burst of bright color.

"You can tell from the video how crummy it looked before we did it. It made a huge difference," Monaco says.

Looking out at Times Square from the kitchen of his pizzeria, Hernandez is hopeful for business. "With fresh paint, and the water great right now, it seems like it's going to be a good season."
