Red tide subsides in Lee County

By Staff | Jul 20, 2018

The Gulf off of Lee County is getting a little relief this week.

According to Thursday’s report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the amount of respiratory irritation levels experienced in Lee County was low on average.

Southern Lee County did not have any red tide levels recorded. Central Lee County on the Gulf had low levels, and none in the bay region. Northern Lee County on the Gulf was experiencing moderate levels, and in the bay region, low levels.

Sarasota and Charlotte counties are still experiencing high levels in some areas.

While red tide may have subsided in Lee County, the water is discolored as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began Lake Okeechobee releases again last week, sending freshwater from the lake down the Calooshatachee River at a rate of 4,400 cubic feet per second. The corps goal is to hit 3,000 cfs on average for 14 days, starting with three days of no releases last week and ending with 3,000 cfs next week.
