Fort Myers Beach Bulletin, Fort Myers Beach Observer

Time is running out to sign up for a golf tournament to benefit Cape Coral Special Populations.

Hosted by the Guardian Angels for Special Populations, the 11th Annual Special Populations Golf Classic will take place on Saturday at the Palmetto Pine Country Club, with a shotgun start set for 7:30 a.m. The four-player team scramble will feature cash prizes, drawings, 50/50 raffle, food and more.

As of Tuesday, 25 teams had signed up to take part in this year's tournament.

"We can still go with another 12 (teams), so we have plenty of space," Vince Marcucci, president of the Guardian Angels for Special Populations, said.

He noted that Hurricane Irma has had an impact on early registration.

"It's a little lower," Marcucci said. "Everything's been running behind because of the hurricane."

The deadline to sign up is Friday at 4 p.m.

The event raised $58,000 for Special Populations in 2016.

"Last year was awesome," he said. "It was also the 10th anniversary."

Marcucci hopes to raise the same or more this year, but does not think it will happen.

"We'll be within our budgeted amount, which keeps us going throughout the year," he said.

"This is our largest fundraiser," Marcucci added.

Participants can register in teams of four, in pairs or as individuals.

"We'll partner them up as long as we have others," he said. "We do have openings now for doubles and singles, so we're good."

The entry fee is $120 per player and includes the 18-hole round of golf, a continental breakfast and buffet lunch, complimentary beverages and snacks during play, and a complimentary gift bag.

Registration and breakfast will open at 6:30 a.m., with the shotgun start to follow.

"The country club puts out a cash bar," Marcucci added of breakfast.

Players can win up to $800 in cash prizes and $10,000 on a hole-in-one. Other hole-in-one prizes include a Sharp LCD flat screen TV, set of Callaway irons, and roundtrip domestic airfare for two.

For the men and ladies, there is a $50 cash prize for the longest drive on Hole 18, as well as a $25 cash prize for the straightest drive on Hole 4 and a $25 cash prize for the closest to the pin on Hole 12.

"There's also a couple smaller games," he said.

The first place team will take home $300, with $200 going to second and $100 up for third.

"They do sell mulligans," Marcucci said.

Participants can purchase squares on site to win deals for hotels, jewelers, entertainment and more.

"We have a grand prize square board with lots of local items," he said.

There will also be a drawing for a seven-day Caribbean cruise; tickets are $20 each.

In addition, drawings for four raffle packages and a 50/50 raffle will take place.

"There's a great lunch buffet afterward," Marcucci said of the tournament.

He urged people to sign up and take part.

"Scholarships are our biggest need right now," Marcucci said. "We're trying to help (Special Populations) participants who don't have the funding."

Currently, Special Populations has 120 participants enrolled in the day and evening programs, along with the after-school programs. In total, about 85 participants take part in the daytime activities.

"It really provides time for them to be with friends and express themselves in a safe place," he said.

"We also work on goals, living skills and work skills," Marcucci added.

To register for the tourney, visit the Guardian Angels at www.myspecialpops.org and pay using PayPal. People can also contact the office at 239-574-0574 and sign up over the phone using a credit card.

Cape Coral Professional Firefighters Local 2424 and Kiwanis Club of Cape Coral are sponsors.
