Editor's Note:

I'm a Missouri girl. We don't have hurricanes where I come from.

So as the days crept closer, I had no idea what to expect from Irma. When the storm hit, I thought I might see cars and cows flying past my apartment window.

There was one thing I did expect from Irma - and that expectation was met without a doubt.

I knew when I ventured out to the beach on Monday after the storm, I'd arrive to see Fort Myers Beach and San Carlos Island's businesses and residents picking themselves up and reaching out to help each other.

Some were without power for more than a week or suffered damage to their properties, but that didn't stop them from helping others. Not a day went by that I didn't hear about the generous acts from residents, businesses and local organizations. One man bought ice for his whole street. A group of friends spent the week clearing debris from others' yards. Restaurants opened as soon as they could so people could get a hot meal and cool off. The acts of goodwill were endless, and I'm sure I only heard a few of the many.

I don't live on the beach. I didn't grow up here. But I had beach folks calling and texting me after the storm, asking if I made it through okay and if I needed anything, asking if I needed a place to get out of the heat. My beach community helped relay information to me while my office was closed so that I could get it out to the public.

I didn't know what to expect from a hurricane, but I did know what to expect from this community.

Thank you to everyone who stepped up to help their fellow neighbors in need in whatever way they could. We should all be proud to be a part of this community.
