Support our Historic Society in its efforts to preserve historic cottage

To the Editor:

Many thanks to our Estero Island Historic Society. Because of its leadership, we have a chance to save one of our island's most iconic cottages. This cottage was, until a few weeks ago, located at 3360 Estero Blvd. The land had been sold and the home was scheduled for the wrecking ball.

The cottage was rescued because of the quick action of town planner, Matt Noble, local contractor, Joe Orlandini and the past president of the Historic Society, Russ Carter. The men knew the Historic Society wanted to give the cottage a home, but at the time of the move it did not have enough land. Joe agreed to move it to property he owned until the Historic Society is able to obtain additional land. These three men took a leap of faith and moved it on the proverbial "wing and a prayer".

The Historic Society leases land from the county to house its current operation near the entrance to Matanzas Pass. To provide room for the Estero Boulevard cottage, the Historic Society needs to expand its lease to acquire a bit more property. The Historic Society is in the process of having a survey done to determine exactly how much additional land will be necessary. Once the survey is completed the Historic Society will make application to lease additional land.

The Historic Society will need our support, both financial and moral. The survey itself will cost more than $1,200. There will be costs associated with petitioning the county for additional land. And, there will be long term costs to maintain and operate the cottage. In addition, the Historic Society will need our support when the county considers its request for additional land.

You can show your support by joining the Historic Society. Membership cost is $15.00 a year or $100.00 for a lifetime membership. Mail your check to: Estero Island Historic Society, P.O. Box 2815, FMB, FL 33932. Thank you.
