Fort Myers resident Wanda Mullins has more than one reason to go all-out on her birthday.

She's not only celebrating her date of birth, but that of the United States.

This July 4 marks Mullin's 72nd birthday.

“I try to get a new shirt every year,” she said.

"I feel special to be born on the liberty and freedom day," she said.

So, Mullins celebrates in style. She's usually riding in the Fort Myers Beach parade in a convertible, holding a sign or throwing out candy.

And, she's decked out head to toe in all things red, white and blue. She's been collecting patriotic gear to wear her whole life.

Many of her items are so unique or original, people are always asking her where she got them or if she would sell them. Sometimes, she'll consider a trade, but some items are special, like the star-shaped headband she wears.

"My mom always said I was the star of the day (on July 4)," she said.

Holiday birthdays seem to run in the family. Michael, one of Mullins' two sons, was born on Christmas Day.

Mullins grew up in eastern Kentucky, near Lexington, on a tobacco and horse farm with her 15 siblings. She had a knack for playing horsehoes, a skill that's now translated into cornhole: "I'm the corn hole queen of the beach," she said. Mullins plays five tournaments a week during season, easily beating the college kids, much to their amazement. She also yodels karaoke at the Light House Tiki Bar and was once crowned Miss Kentucky.

"I've had a good life," she said.
