Knotty Bean opens second location in library

June 28, 2017

Fort Myers Beach Library patrons can enjoy a fine cup of coffee while they peruse the shelves.

Knotty Bean Coffee Cafe opened June 15 on the third floor of the library, filling the cafe space left vacant after the Bookmark Cafe shut down.

Owner Valorie Steinbeck's excited about the exposure this second location gives her shop, as well as the chance to serve customers while they work or hang out in the library. If they sip their coffee on the third floor, the tall, wide windows provide a beautiful view of the Gulf.

Owner Valorie Steinbeck manages her second location of her coffee shop at the library.

"It's a pretty neat little place," Steinbeck said.

Steinbeck and her husband, Steve, opened their first location in January right next door in the Sea Grape Plaza. It was originally called the Twisted Bean.

The library location is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.to noon. Its menu features breakfast and lunch items and pastries. Steinbeck also makes smoothies and acai bowls at this location, but the menu varies.

"I'll have to play the busy season by ear," she said. If she's getting a lot of traffic during the winter, the hours may be adjusted.

One constant is the coffee: both locations serve up Oceana Coffee, which is roasted in Jupiter, Fla.

Steinbeck is still cooking up new and fun menu items for both locations, as well as new events and offerings. She is working with the Alzheimer's Association to hold Memory Caf social outings at her Sea Grape Plaza location. Memory Cafs are specially-designed social engagement sessions where caregivers and spouses can take their patient or partner with dementia or Alzheimer's out for socializing in a safe, judgment-free environment.

Often, those with dementia or Alzheimer's and their caretakers do not have the option to get out and about because of the level of difficulty to engage in social interactions. These Memory Cafes allow everyone to have fun and meet others going through similar experiences.

"It gives them good, quality interaction without the stigma and challenges in public," she said.

The library is located at 2755 Estero Blvd. The first Knotty Bean location is at 2801 Estero Boulevard, Suite K.
