Support local water testing

To the Editor:

I urge our community and our Mayor Dennis Boback and Town Council members to support a proposal by the SWFL Clean Water Movement for the Town of Fort Myers Beach to conduct its own water quality testing and to post these results on the Town's official website. These tests would include the most important measures for public health and safety, specifically, bacterial counts, phosphorus and nitrogen. The Town's Environmental Specialist would be responsible for posting this data on a weekly basis in an easily- understood format, including graphs and other visuals. The public could access this information from a tab on the Town website and via QR codes using a cell phone.

Localized testing has the advantage of providing the most accurate and timely information to residents and visitors alike regarding water quality for recreational activities on our beautiful beaches. By offering this service, our town can send a powerful message to the public that our leaders are serious about practicing good governance and transparency. A proactive stance on educating the public is an excellent opportunity for Fort Myers Beach to become a leading voice in the fight for clean water for all of Florida.

Please support water quality testing by the town of Fort Myers Beach!
