They missed the bus!

To the Editor,

In November, Florida Dept of Transportation made a presentation to the Fort Myers Beach Town Council workshop "FDOT presents San Carlos Boulevard ideas, Nov 9th".

I found it very depressing that there was no mention of the bus lane option. And I was appalled that FDOT is considering "two lanes of traffic onto the beach and one coming off the beach" by re-striping the road, which would remove the alternating signal at Buttonwood Road - currently the choke point for traffic approaching our island, and presumably would remove the bus lane on the bridge.

We already have a traffic problem on the island. Why do we need two lanes of traffic coming over the bridge looking for somewhere to go, instead of the one lane at present?

What we need is a bus lane from Summerlin Square to Estero Island. We need modern air-conditioned, comfortable buses with lots of space for coolers, chairs and bags. We want the bus to speed past the stationary, steaming traffic on San Carlos Blvd, making it the obvious and preferable way to get to the beach!!

On the same topic of traffic, I was also dismayed that Mr. Torgerson's proposal for the downtown redevelopment has dropped the idea of extending the pedestrian-only area by making Estero Blvd traffic use Crescent St and go around the back of his development to reach the bridge. There's no rational reason traffic couldn't be forced to use the signposted "Island Exit" route at Crescent St, beginning right now.
